Making children first
Never
allow them to be out of your sight in a public place. Hold their hands if
necessary.
Keep
them busy with good things, such as
scouting, music, church, and extracurricular school activities.
Take
interest in what’s happening at their school, attend school activities, and get
to know their teachers.
Spend
evenings with them helping with homework and setting goals to improve their
grades.
Build
a trusting relationship with them so they will come to you with their personal
problems.
Know
where they are at all times. Monitor the company they keep.
Start
them young watching good TV programs and
know what they are doing on the Internet.
Before
you move your car make certain they have their seat belts buckled.
Keep
guns, ammunition, and alcohol stored in a locked cabinet.
Don’t
smoke in your home. It’s a bad example and secondhand smoke is unhealthy for
them.
Use
of drugs and alcohol is wide spread in schools. Read-up on the signs at
www.acde.org/parent/signs.htm.
Don’t
rely on Malls, peers, TV, neighbors, or the Internet to babysit and entertain
them.
Make
your home a peaceful and loving place for them and don’t argue in their
presence.
Give
them lots of love and attention or they may go to others to get it.
Be
at home when they come home from school and spend quality evenings with them.
Make
dinner a daily time for the whole family to be together. Give them ample time to
talk about their day.
Go
to church on Sunday as a family and get them involved in a youth group at your
church.
Take
them to the library often and help them
find interesting books that they will enjoy reading.
Be
a good parent so they will be proud of you. Set good examples for them and
always make them first.
Children mirror their parents, so don’t be
surprised when they grow up to be like you. If you want your children to be the
best, let them see the best in you.

How do you rate as a parent?
Rate yourself. Next, allow your children to rate you. Finally, sit down with your children and discuss the ratings and how you can improve your ratings. A month later do it again to see how much you have improved. Include your children and ask for suggestions. Score on a scale of 0 to 10.
